Size 20 thread in 2 different colors
2 shuttles or tatting needle and ball of thread
Terms
SSSR - single shuttle split ring(1). Shuttle to be used is indicated by number, shuttle 1 or shuttle 2
SR - split ring, which is notated by 5-5/5-5. The number on the left is the core thread, shuttle 1; the number on the right is the wrapped thread, shuttle 2

(1)The single shuttle split ring (sssr) creates the same effect as a split ring. However, the true split ring requires two shuttles to create it. If only one shuttle is available this sssr makes it possible.
A line of one or more rings is tatted but they are only partially closed. The last ring in the row is a complete ring which brings the shuttle down in a position to begin wrapping the ds on the bare thread of the unfinished rings.
