Dr. Kate Hanson is a forensic psychologist, and, along with her colleagues Lieutenant Joseph Corrigan and Detective Sergeant Watts, make up the UCU – Unsolved Crime Unit. They specialize in solving cold cases, and when the body of Michael Flynn, a 20 year old man who has been missing for a year, is found in a sarcophagus on the grounds of a church, they are called to investigate. Something Evil Comes is the fourth installment in the Kate Hanson series by A.J. Cross. The novel is set in Birmingham, in the UK, and Cross’ writing captures the ambience of England.

Flynn’s father is an influential businessman in the community and there is pressure to solve the case. As Kate and her team follow the leads, numerous suspects emerge, and readers will certainly have trouble guessing who-done-it.

The main characters are likeable and well-developed. Kate seems like a regular person, albeit a higher-than-average IQ, with a struggling teenage daughter whose IQ has gotten her taking college classes. The mother-daughter struggles are typical, and bring the novel to a relatable level. Both Kate and her daughter, Maisie, are both fairly unique characters and make for some interesting angles in this thriller. There are enough iffy characters to keep readers guessing about who is good and who is evil. The story flows and is easy to understand. Since the novel is quite short, it is also a fast read. However, it has enough suspense to keep readers reading till the end.

Although Something Evil Comes can be read as a standalone novel, most readers will also want to pick up the previous novels in the series which are also well written. Cross is a good author to follow, and those who like novels without a lot of graphic violence, sex, and language will appreciate her stories.
